Lewis A McGill

Lewis A. McGill, 96, of 82 East End Mountain Road, Mill Hall, PA died Sept. 7, 2017 at the Haven Skilled Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Lock Haven, PA. Born February 18, 1921 in Salona, PA he was the son of the late Lester and Laura Caris McGill. On August 9, 1947 in Jacksonville he married Beverly Vonada who survives at home. Lew was a 1939 graduate of the Lock Haven High School and from 1939 until 1943 he farmed along with his parents.

 On May 2, 1943 McGill enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps and he rose to the rank of SGT on Feb. 25, 1944 as a Radar Technician. He served in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Vella La Vella, Guam, Pelieu and China. Lew participate in the occupation of China and the ceremony at the surrender of Japanese military forces at Tsingtao, China. For his service he received the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 bronze service stars, the World War II Victory Medal and the China Service Medal.

McGill graduated from Lock Haven State College in 1950 with a BS in Secondary Education and in 1951 he graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Masters in Education. From 1954-1955 Lew taught in the Clintondale and Porter Twp. Schools. He then taught Math at Bald Eagle- Nittany and became the Principle at both Loganton and Bald Eagle-Nittany. From 1957 until 1970 he was the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Clinton County.

He was a member of the Salona United Church of Christ and a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Mill Hall. He had been presented the Hixon Award by the Mill Hall Kiwanis. 

He is survived by:

          1 Daughter: Marcia (Dennis) Bauman, Mill Hall, PA

          2 Grandchildren: Douglas N. Bauman and Jan P. Bauman

         1 Sister:  Janet E. Miller

         1 Brother: John C. McGill

A funeral service to honor the memory of Lewis A. McGill will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. in the Dean K. Wetzler, Jr. Funeral Home, 320 Main St., Mill Hall, PA with  Pastor Cindy Killinger,  Friends will be received in the funeral home 1 hr. prior to services Saturday.  Interment, Cedar Hill Cemetery,  Mill Hall, PA.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salona United Church of Christ thru the funeral home.
