Edwin L. O’Connor, of Melville, New York, died peacefully with his wife by his side on Friday, December 4, 2020. He was born in Port Matilda, Pennsylvania on March 30, 1925 to parents Fred and Anna (Coder) O’Connor.
Edwin graduated from Mill Hall High School. After graduating he briefly worked for the Mill Hall Bank before enlisting in the Navy during World War II. After the Navy he returned to Mill Hall working at Sylvania before he joined Sperry Gyroscope Company becoming a field engineer. His many projects included assignments not only within the United States but also around the world.
While he enjoyed the opportunities Sperry and the Navy provided to him, home was always Mill Hall – returning at every opportunity to enjoy the beautiful mountains.
His greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife Marie (Weaver) O’Connor, of Mill Hall. They were married 73 years and shared the same birthday, two years apart. He is also survived by his son Larry O’Connor (Christine), daughter Lynne O’Connor (Johnny), and brother Kenneth O’Connor (Mary Ellen). He was highly influential and loved by his grandchildren --- Michelle (Paul) , Michael (Jessica), Jill (Jesus), Denise (Brandon), Doreen (Jeffrey), Debbie (James), Justin (Katelyn), and Brian (Jacqueline) - and sixteen great-grandchildren with more to come. Additionally, he was a favorite uncle to his nieces and nephews.
His son, Gary O’Connor (Debra), died due to a 9/11 illness. He is also predeceased by his brother William O’Connor (Esther) and sister Evelyn Pankuch (John).
Funeral service honoring the life of Edwin L. O’Connor will be Friday, December 11, at 1:00 PM – officiated by niece Rev. Deborah O’Connor-Slater; with visitation from 11:00 – 1:00 PM at Dean K. Wetzler Jr. Funeral Home, 320 Main St., Mill Hall, PA – followed by his military honors burial at Mount Bethel Cemetery next to his son Gary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mill Hall United Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.
